Freezing parents and carers waiting for their little people to emerge from Broughton Primary School may soon have an alternative spot in which to chill.

A local resident – Yosef Mazon – has applied for permission to convert the Broughton Road police box opposite the top playground at the corner of St Mark’s Path into a takeaway coffee and food outlet (Ref. 15/05365/FUL).

The plan is to install two external counters and two stable-door openings, to set up an awning at the front, and to repaint the whole structure a different colour.

An Edinburgh-based developer seeks planning consent to alter, convert and subdivide a B-listed office at 18 Dublin Street into five flats (Ref. 15/05420/FUL).

The proposed development (in premises recently known as MacLaurin House, and home to the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries) would comprise one 3-bedroom dwelling (in the capacious basement) and four 2-bedroom ones on the ground to third floors above.

Permission has been granted for a change of use from Class 4 business space (office/light industry) into three apartments at 14–16, 20, 24, 26 Beaverhall Road (Ref. 15/03142/FUL).

The land is currently vacant, but there will be two new 2-bedroomed flats and one 3-bedroom one.

A Council report on the proposal concluded that it was:

of an acceptable scale, form and design, will not result in an unreasonable loss to neighbouring amenity and will provide an acceptable level of amenity for the future occupiers. There are no traffic or road safety issues. The proposals are acceptable and there are no material considerations which outweigh this conclusion.

Work has begun on stripping out the former premises of And So to Bed at 30-30A Dundas Street, photographed here under romantic lighting prior to its conversion into a spanking new Tesco (see Breaking news, 29.9.14).
