BAXTER'S PLACE GAP-SIGHTS

Here’s a sight that hasn’t been seen for some time, and probably won’t be seen again soon.

It’s the rear of Baxter’s Place viewed from Marshall’s Court, where demolition behind Nos 1–2 has freed the Category A-listed structure of its 1970s 4-storey office appendage.

The building – situated immediately to the north-east of Greenside Lane – has changed little since George Washington Wilson photographed it in 1885 from Calton Hill. (Direct links to this image don’t always work, so instead go to the Wilson Archive at Aberdeen University and search for Granton.) See Issue 214 for analysis of the Broughton background.

The work underway here is part of Trendy Celt’s transformation of and addition to 1–5 Baxter's Place (Ref. 13/03075/LBC) to create a substantial (Marriott?) hotel block with pedestrian link. Listed building consent was finally granted just before Christmas 2014. See also Breaking news (28.11.12).
