BROUGHTON RALLIES BEHIND GOOD CAUSE

Lynne Williamson is busy raising funds for Waverley Care – the Mansfield Place-based charity which cares for and supports people in Scotland living with Hepatitis C and HIV.

Her efforts include running the Berlin half-marathon and the Edinburgh marathon, and will end (for a while) in a 310-mile London to Paris bicycle ride in early June. Not bad for a woman who doesn't consider herself an athlete, who only took up running at the beginning of the year, and has so far survived everything from thick snow, foot blisters and near heat exhaustion in a bid to raise around £2000 for a cause she is deeply committed to.

'She takes inspiration from the children at Waverley Care, both in terms of their resilience in coping in difficult circumstances and in terms of wanting to be a good role model for them by encouraging physical fitness and good health,' writes colleague Karen Docwra.

'I enjoy setting myself wee challenges to work towards,' Lynne says of herself, 'plus sometimes I think maybe I'm a bit mad.'

Nearer to home, and closer in the diary, is a fundraising event Lynne is organising for Thursday 28 April. It's a comedy night at Sláinte Mhath (Melville Place), and will be hosted by Jojo Sutherland with performances from the Sensational Alex Salmond Gastric Band and the Kasengele Brothers. Tickets cost £7 and are available from Waverley Care Fundraising (Tel. 556 9710).

This is where Broughton – and Broughton business in particular – has rallied to the cause. Local firms offering raffle prizes include: John Malcolm Hairdressing (cut/blow/luxury facial); Smoke Stack (£20 voucher); Narcissus Flowers (£25 voucher); Stand Comedy Club (tickets); Jamie Chalmers, award-winning Rasayana therapist (2-hour voucher worth £160). Litres of Bailey's, brandy and Martini are also on offer, plus homemade tablet rumoured to be so toothsome and delicious that it can even slow Lynne's enthusiastic flow of words.

We'll keep you posted on all her fundraising projects over the next few weeks.
