SKY'S THE LIMIT FOR WORLD HERITAGE SITE ROOFTOP POLE PROPOSAL

Vodafone and 02 seek planning permission for ‘6 pole-mounted antenna to accommodate rooftop cabinets’ above Centrum House at 108–14 Dundas Street (Ref. 11/00334/FUL). Not textbook English, perhaps, but clear enough.

The applicants say a City of Edinburgh Council Planning case officer has already intimated in a letter that ‘equipment on the roof is to be welcomed and could be acceptable’.

Local purists take a dim view of intrusive erections, particularly ones which ‘impact the city skyline’ at a gateway to the World Heritage Site. However, they are unable to gain a clear sense of the proposal since 8 of the 12 documents supposedly relating to it and posted on the Council’s online Planning portal in fact refer to a quite separate application at Colinton Mains Drive.

Spurtle has alerted city officials to the problem, and urged them to extend the period for consideration and comment.

UPDATE 14:25: Planning officials have promised to amend their website by Monday 21 February. The deadline for comments or objections to Ref. 11/00334/FUL has been extended by a week to 18 March.
