BRUTE ELEGANCE

Submitted by Editor on

We thank reader Anne Sutherland for sharing the poem below, recently encountered online.

The Concrete Ballerina

On the cold platform, I watch them sway,

The cranes across the tracks today,

Hauling heavy concrete loads,

Above the busy, urban roads.

They twist, they pirouette, they dip,

A masterful, mechanic grip,

Bringing the city higher still,

Following the developer’s will.

It is an anonymous response to the giants currently at work on the New Town Quarter.

Sutherland, too, is interested by how the 'elegant beauty and brute power of the cranes is juxtaposed against the fierce resistance to the site development and urban change'.
