LOOKING AT CALTON HILL HISTORY IN MORE DEPTH

Submitted by Editor on

The Calton Hill Conservation Trust has arranged a series of events for locals looking at the archaeological potential of the area.

The project will be run by the Edinburgh branch of Headland Archaeology (HA). It will look into the human history of the Hill, about which little is known before building of the old observatory house in 1776.

A photogrammetric survey from the air took place using a drone on 15 January.

The overlapping images from this will be used to construct a three-dimensional model of the landscape, perhaps revealing hitherto unknown or half-remembered features which are difficult to spot from the ground.

This exciting technology will be explained during a talk in HA’s Jane Street premises on 31 January.

A guided walk over the site will follow on 7 February, during which archaeological methods, research frameworks and map regression will be discussed in relation to Calton Hill and its wider Edinburgh context.

Two weeks later, on 21 February, an on-site walkover survey will allow participants to explore the Hill and record any findings.

A final workshop on 28 February will summarise the area’s potential and suggest further research.

At the end of the project, Headland Archaeology will evaluate its worth and the potential for future engagement in community events.

All the events are free (although voluntary donations are possible). You can reserve a place here.
