St MARK'S PATH REOPENS

Submitted by Editor on

St Mark’s Path reopened yesterday and will remain open for most of the construction period between now and completion in spring 2027.

In the future, the Path will have to close for periods of a few days, during which time alternative arrangements will be in place.

These include a circuitous diversion around the neighbouring construction site and a controlled crossing point.

This solution is unclearly explained with a profusion of red lines in the site plan shown below.

CCG’s about-turn on the Path closure followed a robust campaign by local coffee-kiosk owner Yossi Mazon and his professional representative.

Behind the scenes, quiet but effective lobbying by the New Town and Broughton Community Council, Leith Central Community Council and Ward 12’s Cllr Jack Caldwell persuaded both the contractor and Council officers to take timely action.

Individuals and hyperlocal media also played a part.

A chastened but unapologetic CCG has outlined the new arrangements in an updated newsletter. Here the company belatedly acknowledges that ‘engaging with the local community is hugely important.

‘We understand that the impact construction can have on the wider community and that is why, for the duration of our time on-site, we will provide you with updates about our activities as well as informing you of any works that may extend beyond the site and impact your day day-to-day lives, including such things as road closures, parking restrictions and path closures.’

Work on the site has now finished for Christmas. It will resume on 5 January. CCG has apologised in advance for the unavoidable inconvenience of pile driving, scheduled to last from the middle of next month to late February.

We extend best wishes to staff and pupils at Broughton Primary School.
