Local author Rosslyn MacPhail’s biography of her great great grandfather Captain John Orr (1789–1879) was published in October and will be launched later this month in Edinburgh Castle. 

 

Based on a previously unseen campaign diary and letters, From Fighting Napoleon to the Scottish Military Academy recounts Orr’s active army career in the Peninsular campaign from 1811 to 1814 (Salamanca, Burgos and the Pyrenees) and then at Quatre Bras and Waterloo (1815), where he was wounded in the knee and later pensioned off.

Edinburgh World Heritage is keen to correct widespread misconceptions surrounding its efforts to consult on and shape reform of its governance arrangements.

 

Wendy MacCadie, EWH’s Head of Engagement and Operations, has provided the following clarification of what’s been going on.

As you read this, advance copies of the November Spurtle are already appearing across Broughton like early voters in a faraway election of which we know nothing.

 

Issue 345 begins with news and views of something much closer to home about which we know increasingly more. It continues with the proposed sound of silence, a look at the pre-LEZ Old Town and a naked appeal for money.

 

On Page 2 we feature a fox and a failure to fix, a long list leading to NOTHING, too much or too little bark, various jams and a local samizdat involved with a splash.
