DODGY ELECTION BAR CHARTS 4

Submitted by Editor on

NEW ENTRANTS AND THE FINAL TALLY

The election leaflets have been pouring in, and along with them more dodgy bar charts, including a repeat and one with, literally, a new slant on the topic.

First to Labour's Gordon Munro, who, up until now, has had an unblemished record of bar chart scaling.

Sadly, the Labour horse has fallen at the second fence:

CALLING ALL WONKS

Are you an election wonk?

Does your heart beat a little faster at the first sniff of a Dimbleby?

If so, then Friday’s press release from City of Edinburgh Council is just the thing to make your Monday go with a swing.

We reproduce it below in full and ask any reader who knows what a fingerette is to get in touch.

GENERAL ELECTION BY NUMBERS IN EDINBURGH

GLIMMER OF HOPE IN BROUGHTON

Submitted by Editor on

While Britain woke to news of horror and tragedy this morning, in Broughton there was a glimmer of hope.

The Revd Graham McGeoch had earlier invited Annandale Mosque’s Shaykh Hassan Rabbani to address the congregation at Broughton St Mary’s during their celebration of Pentecost.

Rabbani’s ground-breaking visit attracted a diverse audience – not all regular churchgoers – of over 100.

LEITH WALK CONTRACTOR IN DEEP HOLE

Submitted by Editor on

Land Engineering Ltd – the subcontractor responsible for current Leith Walk Phase 4 improvements between Pilrig Street and McDonald Road – has been put into administration.

In a statement issued to stakeholders this evening, Turner & Townsend Infrastructure said:

Having carried out a comprehensive assessment of the company’s financial stability prior to signing the contract, which did not highlight any concerns, this is unexpected and particularly disappointing.

GENERAL ELECTION HUSTINGS REPORT

Submitted by Editor on

Around 80 people gathered on Tuesday evening for the Edinburgh North and Leith General Election hustings, organised by Leith Central Community Council. In the chair was Keith Anderson, CEO of the Port of Leith Housing Association.

The next day, Annandale Mosque hosted a second hustings, rescheduled because of the Manchester bombing. The meeting was chaired by imam Shaykh Hassan Rabbani, with about 50 people in attendance. Photos accompanying this report come from both meetings.

A MESSAGE FROM ANNANDALE MOSQUE

Submitted by Editor on

Dear Residents of Annandale Street

Greetings. You may have noticed a high volume of movement at the Mosque these past few days. We apologise if this has caused any inconvenience.

The Muslim month of Fasting, Ramadan, is upon us again. This year it is between the 27 May and 24 June. During Ramadan, Muslims are expected to make more of an effort to attend their local mosque, especially during the evening and night-time prayers. Fasting is between Dawn and Dusk and then people are encouraged to attend the mosque to pray and open their fasts.

ISSUE 263 – OUT FROM TOMORROW!

Now summer is in flower and nature’s hum is rarely heard above the traffic’s boom, why not plug your ears with the latest copy of the  Broughton Spurtle?

Read it first, though, for all the latest news in the barony. We have Council election analysis on page 1, along with a famous fiddler, ways to cut bills, concerns about lets and, not unrelated, perhaps the final refusal for the garage that wouldn’t take no for an answer.

Exciting times on Abbey Mount and Warriston Road feature on page 2, along with a bottom-up response to community politics.

DEVELOPMENTS ON MULTIPLE LEVELS, ADVERTORIAL, AND DISCREETLY TUCKED AWAY

You know that virtuous glow you exude after pumping iron in your baffies for a couple of hours?

Powerhouse Fitness (‘Europe’s No. 1 for Home Fitness’) hopes for some of the same (minus the foost) by installing new signage outside its premises at 14 Antigua Street (Ref. 17/02265/ADV).

OK ELECTION BAR CHART

Submitted by koru on

At last!

An election barchart in which the length of the bars plotted is proportional to the votes displayed, as verified by Spurtle's 'ruler against the screen' test.

This one, from Labour's Gordon Munro, even has helpful dashed lines to help show the heights of the bars.

FRIENDS DISUNITED – PLEASE HELP!

'Good-breeding is the art of showing men, by external signs, the internal regard we have for them. It arises from good sense, improved by conversing with good company.'

This is just one of the many thought-provoking aphorisms left unsaid by Cato (the cat), the darker of the two Bengals pictured snuggling on the right here.

Cato has been missing from his territory in Broughton Market for about a week. His brother is understandably bereft.
