FIG TARTE TATIN

Submitted by Editor on

With relatively few ingredients, there’s not a lot that can go wrong with a tarte tatin recipe ... you might think.

I – and I’m sure the contestants of the BBC’s most recent series of the Great British Bake Off – would disagree! But once you’ve mastered the art, there are few more satisfying desserts.

Although the apples on the tree in my garden are slowly growing, I couldn’t say no to another fruit that’s in season at the moment: soft, sweet figs.

DOORS OPEN DAY – SPURTLESHIRE UNHINGED

Submitted by Editor on

This year's Edinburgh Doors Open Day returns next weekend on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 September. Organised by the Cockburn Association, it is every self-respecting nosey parker's chance to keek inside buildings where normally one requires more of an excuse to get in than idle curiosity.

Some 121 properties are participating (the full list is available in the file at the bottom of this page), but here we summarise those in or adjacent to Spurtleshire.

REST AND BE THANKFUL

Submitted by Editor on

Bellevue's Drummond Tennis Club members are celebrating Andy Murray's Olympic win in style, with this new gold back-rest for one of their benches.

They haven't gone mad, though, and have thriftily left the bottom-rest in characteristic glossy green.

Local rumour has it that adjacent club furniture may be star-spangled by this time next week. Watch this space.

COUNCIL STEPS IN TO CUT EMPTY HOMES

Submitted by Editor on

City of Edinburgh's Coalition partners are delivering on a promise made after May's election by setting up an Empty Homes Task Force.

The proportion of unoccupied homes in the capital has decreased from 2.4 per cent in 2008 to 2 per cent in 2011 (below the 2.8% Scottish average), but in December 2011 there were still nearly 1,500 privately owned homes here which had been unoccupied for more than 6 months, 967 of them for more than a year. All this at a time when many (particularly young) people in the city are struggling to find an affordable place to live.
