BAKEHOUSE BURNT, KHUSHI'S CLOSED

A fierce fire has damaged the Bakehouse Company café on Broughton Street, and associated smoke damage has caused the temporary closure of Khushi's Punjabi restaurant nextdoor.

The blaze began at around 8.30pm last night, when the Bakehouse was shut. It was spotted and promptly reported by police who were already attending a traffic accident nearby. Khushi staff immediately evacuated their premises. There were no casualties.

Telefonica UK Ltd – as part of its ceaseless efforts to beautify the historic cityscapes of Britain – seeks retrospective planning consent for a face-mounted micro-cell antenna on the ground-floor facade of 126–8 George Street (Ref. 11/01875/FUL). The fixture (in situ, undetected, since 1999) is attached to the frontage of a bar named after Alexander Graham Bell, who would surely have approved.

The astonishing progress of Broughton sportswoman Kimberley Reed is now making national headlines. The 16-year-old field athlete excelled again last week, smashing a personal best and writing herself into the record books. Here, her father Scott updates Spurtle on the Bellevue resident and Drummond CHS pupil's latest achievements.

On Friday of last week, Kimberley took part in two events at the Scottish Schools Championships.

REPORT BACKS BONNINGTON FOR DEDICATED GAELIC PRIMARY SCHOOL

The results of a cross-city consultation on the future of primary-level Gaelic Medium Education in Edinburgh have been announced. The former Bonnington Primary School premises are proposed as a dedicated Gaelic primary school, with nursery provision.

The proposal will now go forward for discussion on 30 June at the Full Council meeting. You can download the report here.

SUCH STUFF AS DREAMS ARE MADE ON

Ewan Taylor's exhibition Psychedelic Collage opened at McNaughtan's Bookshop on Haddington Place last night.

The Bellevue-based artist has been creating these works for 20 years, using images cut from colour magazines to create his beautiful, richly coloured and deeply puzzling works.

Taylor resists interpretation, claiming that 'there is no underlying philosophy', only a mirror-maze progression of inspirations and responses based on the images themselves.
