Maybe it’s the weather. Maybe it’s the time of year or the state of the economy. Whatever it is, there’s a noticeable appetite for escapism round here at the moment.

Crombie’s are feeling seasonal with this Halloween window display (right), presumably promoting Lucifer’s Matchsticks. The shop is reputed to have spooky basement secrets so terrifying that even grown butchers refuse to talk about them. We can vouch for the wall of silence on this matter.

This Kojak lookalike has been turning heads in Canonmills lately.

Getting clean for Halloween, the skeleton reclines in the window of Napier Bathrooms & Interiors – notable for its Halloween displays since removal here from over the road almost 3 years ago.

We’ve been out and about in central Broughton today.

We braved rain, and two celebrities who managed to evade the Spurtle lens by the simple expedient of standing still while we tried to film and stroll past nonchalantly at the same time.

We will spare you the resulting images of a well-filled raincoat’s steamy inside.

LOCALS LAMENT LOSS OF DRUMMOND ELMS

A steady stream of locals has contacted Spurtle this week, concerned by the felling of trees at the top end of Drummond Community High School playground.

In fact concerned does not come close to describing the reactions of some, who have been deeply upset by the loss of such well-loved local landmarks.
